The daily loss limit

Pass a challenge without a rule break: know your room to every limit before entry.

5 min · 8 steps

  1. Step 1 · Limit

The daily limit caps your loss within a single day.

    Example account $100 000 with a 5% limit: you can't lose more than $5 000 in a day.

    $100 000start5%limit$5 000per day

These numbers are an example. Every program has its own, so check your agreement with the firm.

  2. Step 2 · Measured from

The limit is measured from the start or from the day's balance.

The account opens the day at $104 000. Measured from the start the limit stays $5 000; from the day's balance it's already $5 200.

    From the starting balance
    $5 000
One limit for the whole challenge.
    Profit doesn't move it.
    From the day's opening balance
    $5 200
The limit grows with the balance.
After a loss it falls with it.
  3. Step 3 · Work it out

How much room is left to the limit?

Example: the limit is measured from the day's opening balance. Day one closed up, and day two already has a loss.

    • Starting balance$100 000
    • Daily limit5% of the day's balance
    • Day one$4 000
    • Day two so far−$1 000

  4. Step 4 · Day reset

The new day starts by the firm's clock, not yours.

A trade closed at your midnight lands in the firm's day. That day can be a different one.

    1
    Trade closed
    2
    Time in the firm's zone
    3
    Firm's day
    4
    Daily limit

Check the reset hour and time zone in your program's rules. The platform counts the day by the firm's zone, not by your device.

  5. Step 5 · Equity

Measured from equity, the day's floor is higher and the room smaller.

At the reset you hold $2 000 of open profit: equity $102 000 on a $100 000 balance. The floor sits one limit below equity.

If the rule runs on equity, the floating loss on an open trade eats your room before it closes.

  6. Step 6 · Work it out

How much room is left under the equity rule?

Example: the day's reference is the higher of balance and equity at the reset, and the limit is measured from the starting balance.

    • Balance at reset$100 000
    • Equity at reset$102 000
    • Daily limit$5 000
    • Closed today$500
    • Open trade now−$3 000

The item goes into your pre-entry checklist. The platform doesn't check it, so you do.
